Lose Weight? Give Me Drugs!

By Henry John

The National Institute of Health has reported that 65% of Americans are overweight or obese....ho hum! What to do? Go on a diet? Well okay, but studies have found that of those people that go on a diet over 90% fail to achieve permanent weight loss. It seems that the nation's destiny is to look like the inhabitants of the spaceship Axiom in the movie WALL . E!

In the hunt for a solution to the nation's problem, people have been trying everything, and every day a new diet plan appears with 'the' answer.

Maybe it's time to try another diet...it at least shows that you're making an effort. All that calorie deprivation makes you feel that you've got control of the situation. The depression that follows failure is not far off. It's a cruel return for so much effort.

'Drugs man, what you need is drugs...they'll do the trick!' Well, for some they do. They are usually used by those with chronic obesity, the morbidly obese, who have no other solution to their problem. Drugs are not an option for those who are overweight or obese - and never should be. It is not a shortcut that should ever be used.

To be clear - prescription drugs are meant for chronic cases of obesity and for some people with diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. Doctors are normally - or should be - reluctant to prescribe drugs unless it is absolutely necessary.

Apart from anything else, the side effects from obesity drugs are not something most rational human beings would willingly sign up to.

It is depressing to see so many diet solutions offering 'fast weight loss'. The problem with fast weight loss is that it is accompanied not long afterwards by fast weight gain. There will never be any lasting result without commitment to personal change - and this takes real effort.

The only way to achieve real and lasting weight loss is to make a cast iron commitment to personal change. Behavior change is the answer and this only comes through recognizing bad behaviors and learning new habits, slim habits. Permanent weight loss is achievable, all it takes is effort. - 15275
