Has The 3 Flashing Red Lights apeared on your Xbox 360?

By Howie Ja

Has the 3 red light Ring of Death Stopped you from playing your Favourite Xbox 360 games?

I will tell you that your not alone, as it has happened to me a good Three times in 2 very short years. The first console lasted only 2 months from the date i bought it.

Which was ok because the game store just gave me a straight off replacement because it was still under warranty.

However, out of warranty its a right headache.

Microsoft Charge over $100 for the repair. and you will be without your beloved Xbox 360 for 2 weeks or so.

I have also heard a couple of reports, that the Red Ring of Death appeared shortly after The repaired Xbox 360 console, came back from Microsoft.

What is the Exact cause of the Dreaded Three Red light problem?

The root cause for the ring of death is the design of the heat sinks, mainly the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit).

The Optical disk drive is above the GPU, and because of this, the heat made by the GPU is far greater than the heat sink can take in order to maintain an optimal temperature throughout the console.

In the Xbox 360 Elite, Microsoft altered the design of the cooling system so that the Liquid cooling Extend's beyond the CPU to the GPU. This makes the console dissipate the Heat better and therefore does not overheat to the same extent.

So the effect of the heat generated is the warping of the motherboard, which cracks the lead free solder joints, causing the red ring of death.

The only free solution was the towel trick, but that can be even more problematic as it makes the warping even worse, and creates irreparable damage to the already weakened solder joints. I unfortunately, experienced this first hand.

As such, the nature of the internet being driven by money, if you wanted good reliable information, your going to have to pay for it. But at least I didn't have to give any money to Microsoft, Again!

The guides available were countless, I didn't think there would be so many. Having the fix done to your console takes Half an hour - say some guides. And some say two hours.

Some guides out there are summarized garbage with steps missing. But I wanted a guide that had the simplest explanation and no technical jargon. (and if there is any, its explained to you).

To do the fix the 1st time myself did take the guts of 2 hours, and I have an electronic engineering degree! So how is someone who is not technically savvy, fix it in 30 minutes? So what I did was, create my very own web page to review the best guides, and give you my top 3.
