How to Cure Thrush - Know Your Options

By Petra Spink

The root cause of thrush lies with a yeast fungus known as candida albicans. The vagina, stomach and mouth happily play host to this yeast which is perfectly healthy and poses no threat in a stable environment. It is when this correct environment begins to change that discomfort and unwelcome symptoms emerge. Yeast infection (thrush) forms when this agreeable atmosphere changes.

There are numerous reasons for the occurrence of vaginal thrush. Wearing tight clothing such as jeans or favoring synthetic items (eg nylon underwear) which prevents ventilation can increase the likelihood of thrush forming. Yeast infection can strike if throughout pregnancy and/or you are taking antibiotics. when your immune system is under attack can also leave you vulnerable to thrush (eg if you suffer from diabetes or HIV).

What appear to be innocent domestic products such as perfumed bubble bath or vaginal deodorant may also increase your chances of getting thrush. If you are easily stressed out and are not easily relaxed you may also be inviting yeast infection.

Typical symptoms of yeast infection include soreness, redness and itching in the vaginal area as well as the anus (the opening of the rectum). A thick discharge, white in color, almost like cottage cheese may be present. This will smell disagreeable. Passing urine may prove painful as a burning effect is likely. The vagina as well as the vulva (vaginal lips) may look red and irrated and sore to the touch. Having sex can also be painful and a well lubricated vagina is advised.

You need to establish that you do actually have thrush (as opposed to another infection) before you start to treat it. Your doctor will be able to make a diagnosis. An internal examination may be required to be sure it is a yeast infection. Cells may be tested after a swab has been taken from you. You may feel awkward about having this done and this is natural but your doctor has seen it all before.

Once you have established that you are suffering from thrush, you can treat it in a number of ways. Because it is a fungus which causes thrush your doctor or pharmacist may prescribe you antifungal drugs. There are 3 types: creams which are to be applied inside the vagina, pessaries (hard/bullet shaped tablets to be inserted high into the vagina) and capsules to be swallowed.

Numerous side effects are common place as result of taking the traditional, medically dispensed thrush treatments. Creams and pessaries are impractical and can prove to be very messy and inconvenient. Leakage is another concern and thrush sufferers have to be careful that their clothes are not permanently stained. If a woman is taking her period and has started thrush medication beforehand the course of treatment must always be completed even whilst menstruating.

One method that some thrush sufferers use to treat it is capsules which are swallowed. Unfortunatley the side effects are quite unpleasant. Nausea, dizzyness and upset stomach can all be experienced. A tampon left to soak in natural, live yoghurt and then placed high into the vagina is a method also used to alleviate thrush. These days a number of women with candida are choosing entirely natural remedies to cure thrush. - 15275
