Short term health insurance as a uninsured alternative.

By Jeff Cline

Too many people decide that when they are looking at a laspe in health insurance coverage that it is not a big issue. They think they are too healthy to worry about it. Or they think it is only a short lapse and nothing could possibly happen during that short time.

Don't be fooled by telling yourself that. Nobody can predict a sudden illness or an accident. It just is not something you can make plans for. It is called "unexpected" for a reason. It is not time or money that you planned for. It can hit yu when it is very inconvienant. Trust me, I have heard all the horrible stories from customers.

One of these stories is about a young college grad named John. John had not yet found a career and was dropped off of his parents health insurance. He did not find temporary health insurance because he did not find it necessary since he had not been sick in a long time. Fifteen days later he found himself in the hospital with complications of the flu.

This was not something John had ever imagined in his mind. It was indeed an unexpected occurance. Once all was said and done he received multiple bills for all the expenses from the hospital stay. All the bills came to almost $10000. It took John about 6 years to repay that debt.

Another one was Carmen. Carmen lost her job and could not afford the COBRA plan offered. She argued that it was only for a month or 2 so she would wait. Two weeks later on a cold and icy day Carmen parked her car, open the door, stepped out and slipped hitting her head on the curb. Carmen passed out and awoke in a ambulance.

Carmen had been knocked out cold for 30 minutes so they didn't know what kind of damage the fall had made. They ran 2-3 test to rule out any bleeding on the brain or damage to the skull or neck. After a day of testing and probbing they released her saying she had a minor concussion. The bills where enormous. She could not pay them.

Carmen could have avoided all this stress and financial problems if she had only stretched a few dollars and purchased a short term health insurance plan. Both, Carmen and John could have avoided this. They learned the hard way that unexpected illness and accidents do occur.

Never let your health insurance laspe. It is avoidable. If you find you will have a short lapse of 1-12 months of health insurance at least purchase short term coverage. You may not use it, but if you do you will be so thankful you have it. - 15275
