What Mental Health Coverage Is Right For You?

By Charles Johnson

In just a few years mental health insurance has surfaced as a more mainstream issue, thanks mostly to legislation passed in the Clinton years. No longer has the issue of mental health been hidden from the public but is now treated along with other, more standard, physical diseases. With this has come insurance coverage for mental health issues.

These days times are tough, and adding expensive medical bills on top of everything can drive many to a choice between bankruptcy and a lack of treatment. Mental health insurance is often the answer many people are looking for, helping to ease the burden of expensive treatments while helping to overcome mental health issues in a proper manner.

Many times mental health insurance plans are not terribly expensive, though they do depend on your personal situation and prior history of mental illness. Your employer may also include mental health coverage in your existing health insurance plan as an optional add on, or may be included in the package along with your standard physical health coverage. Before purchasing any additional insurance you may want to verify whether you already have the coverage as part of your plan.

Before you buy any mental health insurance coverage, set up a consultation with your doctor to review coverage plans. While some plans may look good on paper, you may be forgetting other treatments that your doctor is more familiar with and may not be covered in your plan. Your doctor has also had experience with coverage of other patients and may be able to recommend specific companies, plans or policies that could save you money in the long term.

The last bit of advice I can give is to do your homework before committing to a coverage. Make sure you cover all of your needs, and be aware of any hidden fees or unnecessary expenses in each plan, and be sure that your policy is exactly what you need. Don't just sign up for a plan because it's the cheapest, but look for what works best for your needs. - 15275
